Final Expense FAQs

Quick answers to the questions people ask most.

Is this a government program?

No. Final expense coverage is private insurance offered by licensed insurance companies and regulated by each state’s department of insurance. It isn’t connected to Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security.

Do I need a medical exam?

Usually not. Most final expense plans ask a short set of health questions instead. Some plans ask no health questions at all.

Can I get coverage if I have health problems?

Many people can. Options exist for a wide range of health conditions, though some plans include a waiting period before the full benefit applies. See understanding waiting periods.

Will my premium go up as I get older?

Many final expense policies have level premiums that stay the same for life. Confirm this for any policy you consider.

Does the coverage expire?

Final expense policies are typically whole life insurance, which stays in force for life as long as premiums are paid.

Who gets the money?

The beneficiary you name on the policy. They can use it for funeral costs, bills or anything else.

How quickly is a claim paid?

It depends on the insurance company. Many pay within a few weeks once they receive the claim form and a certified death certificate.

Can I have more than one policy?

Generally yes, though each insurance company may limit how much total coverage it will issue to one person.

Can I change my mind after I buy?

Most states require a “free look” period after a policy is delivered, during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that, you can usually stop the policy at any time by stopping payments or contacting the company, but coverage ends.
